Signs of communities : the iconography of early towns in Denmark / Anders Andrén

• The aim of the artide is to investigate the internal organization of the early medieval towns in Denmark on the basis of an iconographical interpretation of some coins from the twelfth century. The coins in question show pictures of castles which can be interpreted from German parallels as symbols of towns. This iconographical representation of the towns presupposes a more European urban organization in twelfth-century Denmark than has hitherto been assumed in research into urban archaeology.
