- In order to avoid disruption in heavy traffic during daytime, road works are carried out to an increasing extent during off-peak hours at night. The requirements on the temporary traffic control are however considerably different in daylight and in darkness to ensure acceptable visual conditions for the road users. A considerable difficulty for the driver who is passing a work zone in darkness is to obtain a visual impression of sufficiently good quality, despite glare from oncoming traffic, work vehicles and work zone illumination. This is required to get a correct impression at which speed to drive and where to place the vehicle during the passage. During night-time the pavements are also often wet or damp, particularly during the winter season, which further increases their reflectivity. The reflections in the pavement may conceal road markings on the road way, contribute to the glare and increase the complexity of the visual information to the driver. This constitutes not only a safety risk for the road user passing the work zone but also for the people who are within the work zone. The risk is that the road user misinterprets/misjudges the information from the temporary traffic control and drives into the work zone. Within NORDFUD it has been decided to carry out an extensive project to investigate how to best avoid problems with glare from different types of road works where work is going on during night-time. This report presents the results from one stage of the project where an expert group has made evaluations of temporary traffic controls for a stationary motorway road works that was set up on a closed part of E6 outside Varberg. The expert group consisted of ten people, most of them coming from the project group. A number of different scenarios, i.e. different combinations of traffic control components, were assessed by the experts while driving past the work zone. The experts made a subjective evaluation of the visual guidance and the degree of glare.
