- Since thec early 1950s, there has been intense activity in the application of neutron-beam methods to the study of the microscopic properties of condensed matter. Most of the earler work was in the area of solid-state (or liquid-state) physics, but in the past few years there has been a remarkable extension intp several branches of chemistry. This volume, which has developed from a series of lectures at given at a Harwell Summer School, summarizes the progress to date in using a thermal neutron beam as a tool in chemistry. Both inelastic and elastic scattering processes are discussed. From inelastic experiments, involving the masurement of the change in energy of neutrins on scattering, "dynamical" properties, such as molecular energy levels in solids or atomic motion in liquids, can be examined. Elastic scattering experiments, in which no energy change takes place on scattering, give information about 'structural' properties, such as the arrangement of the atoms or of atomic magnetic moments in the material.
