Sextortion is a form of corruption where sex constitutes the transactional currency. Sextortion occurs when an individual with entrusted authority abuses this authority to obtain a sexual act in exchange for a service or benefit. In the vast majority of empirical cases the perpetrator of sextortion is a man. This chapter investigates how gender norms impact and facilitate sextortion. It suggests that informal descriptive norms about masculinity contribute to the perpetration of sextortion, while informal injunctive norms about female sexual behavior contribute to impunity. Based on case studies of Tanzania and Colombia, the chapter also highlights the importance of formal injunctive norm frameworks for naming and recognizing sextortion. Formal frameworks are necessary, but not sufficient, for combatting sextortion. They contribute to putting the problem on the agenda, but the remaining gap between formal and informal gender norms allows sextortion to continue.
