• There are roughly 200 species of woodpecker found today but because of their specialized way of living many of them are endangered, largely due to fragmentation and and loss of preferred habitats. Sionce woodpeckers in general choose high quality habitats for living they are an excellent group to use as indicators of forests of particularly high conservation value. Ultinately, this is a question that is not limited merely to preserving woodpecker populations, but also to that of preserving the biological diversity found in forests.
