  • This doctoral thesis explores an alphabetical reference work known as Alphabetum distinccionum or Concordantiae Bibliae (hereafter referred to as Alphabetum). It was written by Master Mathias of Linköping (d. c. 1350), a canon of Linköping cathedral and one of the most important medieval scholars in Sweden. He is best known as a confessor of Saint Birgitta. This study is the first attempt to establish a holistic understanding of the nature of Alphabetum, its context and how it has survived to the present.
  • Mathias likely composed Alphabetum in the 1340s. Today, it only survives in part as fragments of two parchment codices and in quoted extracts in other works. Much of this evidence is introduced for the first time in this study. Palaeographical and codicological analyses constitute the basis of this research. The two copies are closely related to Mathias himself. MS L[inköping], which I date to the second quarter of the fourteenth century, is likely an authorial copy or a primary copy. MS V[adstena], which I date to the second half of the fourteenth century, was likely copied directly from MS L. Both copies were disassembled in the early modern era to be reused as covers for account books. The leaves of MS V survive to such an extent, roughly one-quarter of the original number, that it is possible to make estimations regarding the constitution of the full work.
  • Alphabetum was a unique compilation of materials that are typically encountered in separate volumes, namely concordances, collections of distinctiones and encyclopaedias. The work offered almost everything a preacher needed to compose a sermon. The compilation of various materials in a single work offers a rare opportunity to observe how the tools of sermon-making could have been consulted side by side. The composition of Alphabetum is complex. Mathias combined various materials into alphabetically ordered entries and utilised an interlinear reference apparatus, which was unusual for preaching aids. This thesis scrutinises how Mathias arranged his materials and the operative functions he intended for them to better understand how the work was exploited in sermon making. In addition, paratextual elements, such as an instructive prologue, pagination and a summary of headwords are exploited in analysing how the work was intended to be used. These devices demonstrate that Alphabetum was not only a personal reference collection, but it was intended for a larger audience. Yet, the influence of the work seems to have remained local. The surviving witnesses that attest to Alphabetum, its manuscript copies and quotations, come from the Linköping diocese or nearby. At the same time, they testify that the work was still in use by Birgittines in Vadstena a hundred years after it was written.
  • This thesis identifies the sources of Alphabetum to map its literary and intellectual context. Mathias primarily drew on the Bible and biblical commentaries, but his sources also included works of natural history, especially encyclopaedias. The main sources consist of compilations such as Glossa ordinaria, but in addition, he cited individual works by some twenty authors. Although Alphabetum is principally a compilation of citations, Mathias arranged, modified and interpreted the materials in such a way that the work forms a new literary entity. Mathias’s authorial voice, his own diction, can be heard in some commentaries. To contextualise Alphabetum in relation to other preaching aids, this thesis points out parallels and divergences between it and similar tools.
  • The meticulous study of Alphabetum demonstrates that it is possible to attain a detailed understanding of a work that only survives in fragments. By employing various methods and accounting for all pertinent evidence communicated by the extant witnesses, especially cross-references, roughly forty per cent of the original c. 4000 headwords can be identified. These results significantly improve our appreciation of Alphabetum and its subject matter. The appendices to this study, such as a catalogue of the fragments and a list of identified headwords, provide material for future studies.
