• Until recently, the nitro group was looked upon as an auxiliary tool useful in introducing of other substituents or in increasing or decreasing the reactivity of a compound or its substituents. The achievements of chemistry in the course of recent years have completely changed this point of view. The classical work by M. C. Dodd (since 1944) has led to the discovery of the bactericidal properties and low toxicity of nitrofurfural derivatives. A number of metabolites of living organisms and natural productis - such as chloramphenicol and β-niroprpionic acid - were found to contain a nitro group. This encouraged chemists to search among nitro compounds for new drugs and pesticides.
