  • This volume reveals the complicated ways in which British and American media have influenced each other over the past two centuries. In doing so, it adds an important transatlantic dimension to media scholarship, while demonstrating the crucial and varied ways in which media have helped build an Anglo-American 'special relationship'. -- Whether through an Anglo-American 'special relationship' or the potential 'Americanization' of their culture, British observers increasingly view their own national identity through an American lens. At the same time, against the backdrop of mass immigration, America's own commentators debate the centrality of their European cultural and linguistic heritage. Yet the mass media's role in creating Anglo-American cultural interactions remains under-examined, as British and American media are typically studied separately. In these fourteen essays, leading scholars from both sides of the Atlantic examine the institutional and personal connections, and cultural borrowings, among British and American media in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Focusing variously on film, radio, television, newspapers; and on war reporting, celebrity culture, political caricature, and news agencies, these essays show how the two nations' media have helped to shape each other and to contribute to a wider transatlantic culture.
