- A number of Neolithic sites was doscovered in conjunction with surveys undertaken as a part of the archaeological investigations of the Late Mesolithic settlement associated with a former lagoon at Skateholm, in southern Scania. In order to form a view of the relationship between Mesolithic and Neolithic settlement, archaeological excavations were conducted on a couple of these sites situated within a limited area in the inner part of the former lagoon. One of these sites, known as Rävgrav, belongs to the transition between the Early and Middle Neolithic. An abundance of find material, induding organic material, indicates that hunting and fishing played a subordinate role in the economy. The Långåker site, which is situated only a couple of hundred metres from Rävgrav, yielded distinctive material from the end of the Middle Neolithic Funnel Beaker Culture. The area of investigation also contains several other Neolithic sites and information concerning megalithic tombs which have now been destroyed. These are used as the basis on which to postulate a model of the settlement during the Neolithic. Like other areas of investigation in southern Scania, special areas of settlement are identified. more often than not associated with megalithic tombs, in which it is possible to follow a pattern of continuous settlement involving the movement of the farm-like elements over short distances from the end of the Early Neolithic until a late part of the Middle Neolithic.
